The UK Conference and Meeting Survey (UKCAMS) is a major annual study of conferences and business events in the UK, both by volume and budget.
Newly published figures from the research show that in 2015, there were more events at UK venues, but they were typically smaller in terms of delegate numbers and overall budget.
This led to an estimated overall value of £19.2 billion in spending at venues compared with £21.6 billion in 2014 – despite 600,000 more individual business events taking place.
“The findings mirror other recent research which suggests that organisers are being asked to deliver more with static event budgets,” the report’s publishers said.
Meanwhile, venues themselves are confident about the market, with many investing heavily into their facilities.
The survey found 79% of venues invested to some extent in 2015, with an increase in the number investing more than half a million pounds.
Nearly two thirds (61%) said they expect 2016 to show growth in their overall business performance – but of course this depends on customers being able to find the right venues.
